In 1840, the alcoholic drink absinthe went from being somewhat popular to being known all across the world. This is because in the 1840’s decade there was a decent increase in the amount of people that drink absinthe. The reason for this was because of the soldiers who were drinking it.
French Soldiers
French soldiers who were in battle in Algeria during this decade were drinking absinthe because they believed that it would help battle malaria and various other types of diseases. After drinking it for a while, the soldiers started to like it and when they got back from fighting in Algeria, they would want to drink it more often.
Jump in Popularity
At least for France when the French soldiers returned home the boom of absinthe popularity sky rocketed. All of the French soldiers would introduce the mystical green fairy to their buddies back at home. Word got around and the demand for the product went up. Soon more and more people knew about it and more was being supplied.
It wouldn’t be long after the 1840’s that absinthe would be found at every single bar, café, bistro, and pretty much anywhere that you go. It was not the belief that absinthe could cure malaria that made it popular but rather how enjoyable the taste and buzz is. Now, a very long time later, people still enjoy drinking a bottle of absinthe every once in a while because of the exquisite taste and unmatchable buzz that it gives. |
