The colour of absinthe can change a lot between drinks. Different nationalities have different recipes for their absinth and the ingredients could change the color of the drink.
The French
Absinthe has become popular with the nickname “The Green Fairy” due to the fact that it usually holds an emerald green colored resemblance. The Green Fairy begun with the French people as a nickname for the drink and was referred to as ‘la Fee Verte’ in French.
The Swiss Color
In Switzerland, there are some types of clear absinthe and this colored absinthe is often called ‘la Bleue’ but in various other areas the name for clear absinthe is “Blance”. Clear Swiss absinthe originally received the nickname (la Bleue) from bootleggers during the time period where absinthe was banned in Switzerland. The nickname ‘la Bleue’ is still used in reference to absinthe till this date.
There is a wide variety of nicknames in different countries for the drink though. The Green Fairy is probably the most common and the absinthe drink is regularly referred to as The Green Fairy. This can also date back to in the bars where 5PM would be “The Green Hour” in dedication to the delicious green color alcohol beverage – absinth. |
