The way to prepared and drink absinthe was not that difficult but it took some time to catch on to. Absinthe was very popular in bars back in the 19th century and early 20th century. It was so popular that at 5PM every day in certain places it was “l’ heure verte” which means the green hour. This refers to “The Green Fairy” which is the name for a type of absinthe drink.
In the Bars
Not only did absinthe have a certain time of day that was symbolized to the drink but there was a whole lot of attention to the drink. Absinthe quickly grew to be one of (if not the) most popular bar drinks available – definitely one of the most legendary hard liquor drinks still available today as well. In the bars, there were also sometimes people who were called ‘absinthe professors’ because they were there to teach people who are new to drinking absinthe how to water it down the right way.
Watering Absinthe
To water down absinth the right way, it takes patience. It will have to be one drip at a time as the water slowly gets indulged into the absinthe. Most of the time people will use absinthe spoons and also add sugar by using a sugar cube and letting it slowly dissolve into the glass of absinthe as well.
There are various drinking techniques for absinth but in the bars back in the 18th and early 19th century there was one way which was very popular. A lot of people took drinking absinthe seriously and it became a very common drink to enjoy every single day whether at home or at the bar. |
