There are many countries across the world that became famous for manufacturing absinthe. Some have been making it since day one and others picked up on it later on but each holds different qualities in the drink to be preferred over the other.
Early Years
When absinthe was just in the beginning of production back in the early years of the 19th century, Switzerland was probably the most popular place that it was being manufactured in. The second most popular place for absinthe to be manufactured would have been France. Both Switzerland and France claim to be the originators of absinthe and each hold a lot of unique characteristics. French and Swiss absinthe holds values which appeal to consumers.

Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, and Portugal all started manufacturing absinthe later on after the interest started to grow. Even though that was almost a century ago these countries were in action, they were still a little late in the game. Before 2004, Switzerland was filled with various bootleggers that were illegally manufacturing absinthe. The absinthe created by the bootleggers was nicknamed ‘la Bleue’ and the absinthe would be clear in color in most cases.
Without a doubt, the two founders of absinthe were France and Switzerland. Swiss absinthe may be just a little bit more popular though and was indeed in the game first. The recipe was figured out by a French doctor who then sold it to someone else in Switzerland who started manufacturing the drink in Switzerland. Therefore, it would be logical to agree that Swiss absinthe was the first to be made. |
