The history of absinthe dates back to the 18th century. Absinthe has become a legendary drink over the last 200 years. It all started in 1792 when a doctor in Switzerland invented the creation. The main plan that Dr. Pierre Ordinaire had was to provide people with extract from the wormwood plant. This is because the extract of the wormwood plant has been known for being used as natural remedy for many years.
In 1797, absinthe started in production at a more serious rate. By this time, the recipe was purchased from the doctor by a man named Major Dubied who then started to mass produce the drink along side with his son in law named Henri-Louis Pernod. Together, they ran a factory which produced absinthe in large quantity in Val-de-Travers, Switzerland.
Turning in to the 19th century, by the year 1805, Major Dubied’s son in law Henri-Louis Pernod had moved up to a larger building to produce the drink. The new facility was located in Pontarlier, France. At first, the production only consisted of about sixteen litres of absinth a day, after a few years it became nearly five hundred litres a day.
A century later, when the 20th century began, absinth was still running at full force being very popular and many companies were producing absinthe in much larger quantity than before. It all led up to the ban of absinthe where production stopped in some locations. However, other areas kept producing and some just picked up on the habit again recently. The history of absinthe has caught up to today where the drink is still just as popular as it once was. Absinthe is probably one of the most historical drinks ever to be created. |
