A lot of people believe that absinthe is a dangerous drink to consume but this is not really true. If you look at all of the ingredients one by one you will notice that there is nothing to worry about. Let’s do that.
Anise -- Anise is one of the most common herbs in the absinthe drink. Anis is not toxic but consuming a lot could bring you to having epileptic convulsions, analgesia, trembling, feeling drunk, and having spasms with your muscles. Anise could be compared to opium if used in high levels. There is not that much to do this in absinthe though so it is not really something to worry about.
Fennel -- The fennel seed has common psychoactive characteristics that are found in the anise seed.
Hyssop -- If consumed in a large amount, it is believed to lead to convulsions.
Angelica Roots -- In Lapland, angelica is actually made like a drug.
Coriander -- Is believed to be dangerous when mixed with fennel.
While there are some characteristics of certain ingredients which must be watched, the amount of each ingredient that is in absinthe doesn’t seem to be enough to actually cause bodily harm. The main problem is probably the ingredients found in wormwood though and this would include the thujone. Thujone is the reason why so many people protested that green fairy absinthe is dangerous to drink. |
