As many people already know, absinthe was banned in the early 20th century in many countries. However, many appeals have been made and quite a few countries have reversed the decision as of late. There are still some countries which have absinthe on the banned list but others that do not.
The Problem with Absinthe
The problem that the FDA has with absinthe is one of the main ingredients it contains – thujone. Even though absinthe is not actually a controlled substance, it cannot be sold in liquor stores or at bars or night clubs legally.
Countries Allowing Absinthe
At the moment, the United States has legalized absinthe for purchase and owning. A lot of countries in Europe have permitted the sale of absinthe permitting the thujone content level is under or equal to 10mg. Canada has fully legalized absinthe and no matter what the content level of thujone is, it is legalized for purchase. There are various liquor stores which sell absinthe throughout the country.
So it really depends on what country you are in. absinthe is unbanned in many countries that originally banned the drink almost a century ago but not everywhere. There are still some countries which strictly prohibit any purchasing, selling, or possessing of the drink. Most countries are starting to move on to reversing the decision though as recently many countries have legalized (even with some restriction) absinthe once again |
