Whether or not you should add sugar to your absinthe is up to you. Sometimes this process is called ‘burning’ or ‘flaming’ and sometimes it is not suggested. Some people believe that you are ruining the absinthe by adding sugar to it but others claim that it is fine. It’s all just a personal preference and belief really. If you don’t want to risk drowning the absinthe content with sugar, don’t add it. Some people find it too bitter though.
How to Properly Add Sugar to Absinthe
There is a right way and a wrong way to add sugar to absinthe. You should not just pour it right in. you should do it through the method which has been used for many years. There are a few different methods but the main one is through using a spoon. It would be a slotted type spoon (there is such thing as a spoon made specifically for absinthe as well) and you would rest a sugar cube in the bowl area. You will get ice cold (the coldest possible) water and slowly (drop by drop) pour it onto the sugar cube so it dissolves. While doing this, be sure to keep holding the spoon over the glass of absinthe so the water and sugar slowly slide into it. It’s a timely process but it pays off in the end.
You are going to have to water down your absinthe anyways. Still, some people find it a little bitter and others find it really harsh. A lot of people don’t mind the taste but if you do you might want to add a little bit of sugar with it. |
