A lot of people believe that there is a huge trip or major buzz from drinking absinthe. Most of this belief dates back to the 19th century and the early 20th century where it was believed to make people crazy. Absinthe cannot actually cause you to go on a trip.
Ingredients
There are no ingredients which are psychoactive like LSD or THC. Absinthe is not a drug and it will not show up as a drug in a drug test either. The only type of test that could find absinthe usage is one looking for legal substances. The closest thing to actually having any psychoactive ingredients in absinthe is the main ingredient in the wormwood. Thujone is thought to have similar characteristics to THC but it’s not 100% alike. This could be why a mini-trip could occur but an actual trip from drinking absinthe doesn’t really happen.
Historical Absinthe Highs
The highs which were said to occur back over a century ago is mostly just a myth. Some of it is over exaggerated as well. Although, there are some cases which occurred that lead people to believe that heavy drinkers of absinthe could have a crazy high. Take for instance, Vincent Van Gogh who was believed to cut his ear lobe off when breaking into seizures and the blame for the whole event was put on his heavy usage of absinthe.
Every hard liquor drink will give you some sort of buzz but for absinthe to actually make you go on a “trip” is somewhat absurd. |
