Absinthe is a lot different than any other alcoholic beverage. There are a lot of characteristics held to absinthe which makes it unique compared to other hard liquor drinks. The main thing would probably be one of the main ingredients in the drink which is wormwood. This ingredient is not found in many alcoholic drinks and the effects that it causes are very intriguing.
Wormwood
Wormwood is one of the main ingredients in absinthe. However, one of the main ingredients in wormwood is thujone and that is actually what makes absinthe even more unique. It has been found that thujone is what leads to those extra effects that occur from drinking absinthe. Instead of just feeling drunk, the buzz is a lot better than that. Thujone is found in various plants and flowers but there is a lot of it in wormwood (and essentially in absinthe too).
Amount of Thujone in Absinthe
There used to be a lot more thujone in absinthe before. Now, the content amount is lowered quite a bit but it is still there. Thujone is what gives the clear-headed feeling when you get a buzz on from drinking absinthe. It was thought that thujone is a dangerous ingredient so absinthe got banned for a long time. In many countries, it is unbanned again. Now, there is a limit to how much thujone is in a bottle of absinth and it can vary between countries.
There is still enough thujone in a bottle of absinth to give that unique side effect which makes the buzz all the better though. |
