When absinthe was banned in many countries almost a century ago, a lot of people started to forget about the drink. There was still popularity in many countries, especially in Europe, but that was mostly with the bootleggers. There were still some countries that didn’t actually ban absinthe but rather they just gave up on it a little bit. The United Kingdom was one of them.
UK Regulations
An absinthe importer that lives in the United Kingdom noticed that absinthe was never really banned in the UK. At first, the absinth was being produced in Czech Republic and then being shipped into the United Kingdom. With the various rules in different countries, each started to challenge the laws which were in place. Both Belgium and Holland were two notable countries that started using the confusion of the laws in place to their advantage. Switzerland was soon to follow along with the other nations and now absinthe is also legal in Switzerland again.
The United Kingdom is filled with people that drink absinthe. Instead of having to get it from the bootleggers, it was still legally available. This made for a lot of people to start drinking absinthe regularly. Some people would not touch it though because they also believed it was dangerous but others were attracted to the mythological beliefs. Many countries followed on with how easy they could cheat around the rules that were in place and soon the whole world was drinking absinthe again and doing it legally as well. |
