The ban on absinthe was placed in 1912 for the United States. Many countries banned absinthe in the early 20th century because it was believed to be a dangerous drink to consume. In 2007, the regulations of absinthe were revised for the United States. The new rule was that there would be less than 10ppm of thujone in the absinthe for it to be considered legal. In Europe, the thujone limit was set at under 35mg a severe difference compared to the United States new ruling.
Importing
So could you important the stronger absinthe from Europe? Nope. Customs will confiscate the absinthe if it goes noticed. Absinthe is illegal to be imported to the United States. There are a lot of laws for importing alcohol though and alcohol in the mail can be confiscated if it is noticed.
However, you can legally buy absinthe still. While the shipping process is a little iffy, customs usually doesn’t do anything about it because they are too busy watching for drugs and other stuff. It would be best if you picked a bottle of absinthe which is within the legal thujone limit for the United States though.
Even though there are some laws against it and there are some limits, it is not something which you should have to worry too much about. |
