This movie was basically the story of the life of Oscar Wilde. After he actually realized that his sexual orientation was homosexual, it would bug at him quite a bit as he had to deal with the stress of being a father (and living with responsibilities) and getting married. All of this was to do with the man who he loved so much – Lord Alfred Douglas. Not only is there love and confusion between the two but a bottle of absinthe is there as well.
Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde was a heavy absinthe consumer and definitely showed affection for the green fairy. He was definitely heavily obsessed with absinthe. He would explain that how you feel from drinking absinthe would be magical. He would explain that after consuming absinthe, the first drink is just like a simplistic drink and just a light buzz but you feel good. The second drink (which in most cases will occur) makes you start to see some weird, disturbing, and cruel things occurring. To actually get to the third drink, you are then seeing what you want to see or seeing even more disturbing things.
This was all how Oscar Wilde had told the experience of consuming absinthe to be like. In the movie ‘Wilde’ it goes through his life and includes his experience with absinthe as well. This is a prime example of one of the many big names from these times that was a chronic absinthe user and understood the powers that the green fairy held over those that would use it. |
